Question: Which is better canon g10 or rebel xs?

(Posted by: Meowbert on 2009-07-13 20:01:47)

I'm about to take photography in the fall and I wanted to know which camera is good to start out with. I've been looking at the G10 and the Rebel XS for a while now and I can't decide on one. Is G10 better because of its 14.7 MP or is the Rebel XS better because its an DSLR? Please anyone help me :( I'm on a very tight budget since I'm a poor college student.

It really depends on what you need. G10 is a high-end P&S camera, with a smaller CCD compared with a DSLR. It does not allow you to change lens and you are stuck with a fixed zoom range. On the other hand, you will get more flexibility if you choose a DSLR, which allow you to upgrade the lenses according to your needs. Also, in the event you wish to upgrade later, you can just change the body, you can still use the lenses in the new body. Whereas for G10, you cannot do anything.

You seem to have fallen for the pixel count voodoo. What matters is the size of the sensor. The XS has a sensor over 8 times larger than the G10 I was twice a poor student, but I had my priorities set to where I could afford the camera I needed for my studies.

A nice SLR-like camera like the G10 has plenty of great specs. But, after you open the box, that's all you have. A DSLR like the Rebel XS series is a starting place that you can grow with. Think of it this way. The G10 is a very nice apartment. The Rebel DSLR is a house was a large yard. I'd go with the potential that you are less likely to outgrow.

Canon Rebel XS the G10 is just a point and shoot, so if you can afford a dslr, then go for it.
