Question: Is the canon g10 a really good buy?

(Posted by: cutestnatureeeyorelover on 2009-09-20 20:37:23)

I want to buy a professional camera but since I'm just a beginner, I have no idea what is good and what is not. A friend recommended that I get Canon G10. Is it really a good buy? How big is it? Smaller than the usual professional camera?

To me I think the Canon G10 is a little over priced for what it offers and does. Although it is getting a little old, the D40 is a perfectly fine camera for a beginner (I would say even better than the D40x or D60). The D40 new is about $472.00 including free shipping. I would also consider the D3000 instead (about $585.00 including free shipping from adorama.com). The D3000 is a much easier camera for a beginner (has a nice guide feature), not to mention it just came out on the market so it will hold its resale value better. Also, the D3000 kit lens is a VR lens, whereas D40 kit lens does not have vibration reduction technology, thus making the D3000 an even better value. Check out the first two links below for a great review of both cameras. The Canon XS (1000D) about $525.00 for the kit and XSi (450D) about $630.00 for the kit, give you a little more features for your dollar, but I have always preferred Nikon's so I am a little biased toward them. If you like Canon's I would recommend the XSi (450D). Check out link last three for a great review of the cameras and comparison chart between the XSi, XS (1000D), and XTi (400D).

Oh dear, looks like the replies are heading down the DSLR = Professional route (not true). The Canon G10 is the choice of a great many working reporters. It's what I guess you would call a semi-compact, it'll fit into your pocket - if you have big pockets all while packing much of the power of a pro-DSLR. The downside is that if you are looking for a camera for creative work you might find a DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) where you see the image through the same lens as the camera sensor more useful. The Canon G10 (and new G11) are really great cameras, very well built and with the right person using them they'll take great photos. But for total creative control I would recommend a DLSR. In time, if the bug bites you may find it interesting to use both!

For that price you can get the Nikon D40 which offers more manual controls, and interchangeable lens'
